Applying for short term visits in 2006 within the ICTP condensed matter and statistical physics section
 
The ICTP condensed matter and statistical physics section offers yearly a limited number of grants for short term visits (These visits may be for a maximum period of one month.
 
Applications:
1. Applications should include:
    - Detailed Curriculum Vitae(Indicating date of birth, nationality, family status, dependents)
   - List of publications(These must contain all authors, full title and journal reference) 
   - At least two(2) letters of recommendation (for junior scientists, post.docs and pre-docs)
 
Incase support is requested this must be clearly indicated. In case of applicants applying with own funding (not requesting support), the above documentation must be accompanied by a letter of the home institution certifying the full coverage of all expenses
 
2. Scientists from developing countries are encouraged to apply.

Supporting Programme for sub-saharian researchers in mathematics or theoretical physics
 
The Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES), with the support of Schlumberger Foundation, has established a programme aiming to support theoretical research in Africa.
Conditions for application: 
  • To hold a PhD either in theoretical Physics or Mathematics.
  •  To be a post-doctoral, junior or senior researcher.
  •  To be affiliated with an institution located in a sub-saharian country.
The programme provides recipients with;
 -  Travel costs(up to 1,200 US$)

 -   Living expenses

 -  Free lodging at the institutes residence
 -  Free lunches at the institutes cafeteria
 -  Technical and administrative assistance by IHES staff
 
Selection;
      Applicants are selected bi-annually by the IHES scientific committee, consisting of IHES permanent professors and an equal number of external scientists
 
Deadline for application;
May,1st for the spring session
December, 1st for the fall session

THEORETICAL CONDENSED MATTER AND STATISTICAL PHYSICS (CM&SP)  
POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS

(ACADEMIC YEAR 2006-2007)
 
A limited number of post-doctoral positions for young CM&SP theoreticians will be available starting fall 2006Appointments will be made for two (2) years, with the possibility of renewal for one more year.
 
Applications:
Applicants should be no more than 35 years of age at the time of the application and should have obtained their Ph.D. after 2001. Applications should include:

Research Grants for Young Scientists from Developing Countries.
 
 The International Foundation for Science is a research council with international operations and the mission to build the scientific capacity of developing countries in sciences related to the sustainable management of biological and water resources. Since 1974, IFS has provided support to more than3500 IFS Grantees in some 100 countries in Africa and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean .
 
 Research proposals submitted to IFS should be from biological, chemical, physical, sociocultural or economic science fields, and relevant for the conservation, production or renewable utilisation of biological or water resources.
 
 IFS awards research grants with a maximum value of USD 12,000 for the purchase of equipment, expedable supplies, fieldwork activities, etc. Grants cannot be used to cover the grantees own salary.
 
 An applicant for an IFS Research Grant must be a citizen of a developing country country (list of eligible countries is available at www.ifs.se) and at the beginning of his/her research career, preferably be less than 40 years of age, and hold at least an MSC (MA) degree or have equivalent research experience. Many applicants are working towards a PhD or have completed their PhD studies. The researcher must be affiliated to or employed by a national university, research institute or research-oriented NGO in a developing Country.
 
Applications are accepted by the IFS Secretariat throughtout the year with two session deadlines of June 30 and December 31.

TRIESTE SCIENCE PRIZE 

 

THE 2006 TRIESTE SCIENCE PRIZE
 
Introduction
TWAS and Illycaffe have instituted high level prizes to honour distinguished scientists from developing countries. The prize has been named TRIESTE SCIENCE PRIZE in recognition of the unique and fundamental role the Trieste
system of scientific institutions plays in promoting science and technology in the developing world.
  
Purpose
To give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by individual scientists from the developing countries.
 
Nature
The prize is awarded and rotates among the various fields of science. In 2006 the prizes will be awarded in the following two areas:
  1. Mathematics  
  2. Medical Sciences
Each prize will carry a monetary award of US$ 50,000.
 
Eligibility
Candidates must be nationals of developing countries, working and living in the South. The prizes will only be awarded to individuals for scientific research of outstanding international merit carried out at institutions in developing countries.
 
 Individuals who have received the Nobel Prize, The Tokyo/Kyoto Prize, the Crafoord Prize or the Abel Prize are NOT eligible for the Trieste Science Prize.
 
International jury
Each prize is awarded by a jury of internationally renowned scientists charged with the selection of the awardees. The Jury is chaired by the president of TWAS. Members of this jury are not eligible for the prize.
 
Nominations
Nominations are invited from TWAS members, selected individuals, as well as from science academies, national research councils, universities and scientific institutions. Self nominations will not be accepted.
