Global Perspective on Higher Education

Universities as Centres of Research and Knowledge Creation: An Endangered Species?

Today, unprecedented emphasis is being placed on research as key motor for advancing the knowledge society and its offspring, the knowledge economy. Consequently, “research on the state of research” has moved high on the priority agendas for governments, for their specialized agencies and bodies devoted to this area, and for higher education institutions.

Against this background, the central premise of the 2006 Global Colloquium of the UNESCO Forum for higher education Research and Knowledge “Universities as Centres of Research and Knowledge Creation-An Endangered Species” was that research is a key ingredient in the institutional identity of universities and an indispensable prerequisite for a successful programme of teaching and public service. Based on contributions to this Colloquium authors from twenty countries from all regions of the world analyse aspects related to the research function of universities. The book primarily addresses the variety and gaps in higher education across the globe, concentrating on the challenges to transitional and developing countries. It addresses the related issues of research capacity, research productivity and research relevance and utility. Research capacity appears as a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for research productivity; and research productivity must be assessed in terms of utility and relevance.  This book provides a global range of insights both for policy makers and for higher education and research communities.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – The African Climate Change Fellowship Program
Applications are invited for the inaugural round of African Climate Change Fellowships. The African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) aims to support African professionals, researchers and graduate students to undertake activities that will enhance their capacities for advancing and applying knowledge for climate change adaptation in Africa. The program is jointly administered by the global change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training (START), the Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA) of the University of Dar es Salaam and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), with financial support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada.  This Call for Applications is extended to researchers, scientists, and academics working in fields related to climate change and climate change adaptation as well as professionals and practitioners with experience and responsibilities related to policy, planning or management of climate sensitive resources, sectors, systems or livelihoods.  A variety of Fellowship types are offered to support projects, research, and other activities that advance adaptation in Africa. The Fellowships range in duration from 2-18 months, and award amounts range from USD $5,000 - $36,000, depending on Fellowship type. Eligibility is limited to citizens of member states of the African Union who are 40 years of age or younger. A description of each Fellowship type and instructions and guidelines for preparing and submitting an application to be an ACCFP Fellow are provided in the 2008 Call for Applications. The 2008 Call for Applications and other required application materials are available on the Pan-African START Secretariat's website at: https://mail.unesco.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://accfp.pass-africa.org/.  If you have questions about the ACCFP and this Call for Applications or if you have trouble accessing the ACCFP website and application materials, please contact the Pan-African START Secretariat at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Europe-Africa Frontier Research Conference

25 July 2008

INFECTIOUS DISEASES: FROM BASIC TO TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH

The conference will concentrate on basic sciences in order to promote research and cooperation in an area that is generally regarded as of minor importance and therefore does not attract adequate funding in developing countries

Extensive public interest in HIV/AIDS has resulted in diversion of attention to other infectious diseases, even though they still remain a key concern in all countries. In a globalised world almost every issue that concerns Africa affects the developed world, and vice versa. This meeting will focus on the basic mechanisms underlying infectious diseases and explore how they may be applied to drug development and other intervention strategies. The conference will highlight excellence in European and African research in an ‘open forum format’ of plenary discussions and lively interactions both inside and outside the conference room. It is anticipated that this format will help both formal and informal knowledge exchange between leading scientists and young researchers to create new synergies resulting in intercontinental research projects and joint funding applications. Scientists from academia and industry worldwide are invited to apply to attend this conference. Selection will be based on academic merit, with the objective of achieving a balance between African and European participants and with a special focus on young researchers. In order to enable the largest possible number of scientists to attend, a number of travel and conference grants will be made available.
